Founded in 1857 by German immigrants in Carlstadt, New Jersey, the Turnverein of Carlstadt is one of the oldest German-American Turnvereine in the country. Its early youth classes helped seed what is regarded as the first Kindergarten in the United States, and the society later helped launch Carlstadt’s first public school and fire department.The club’s home since 1900 stands at Broad and Monroe Streets and still hosts the Carlstadt Active Turners, Mixed Chorus, cultural gatherings, and community rentals. Visitors and members find a classic German social club rooted in athletics, music, and Gemütlichkeit.
